Energy Water and Waste Management

We have over the last fifteen years strived hard to improve our conservational practices while offering our guests true comforts. Guests and staff are actively encouraged to participate in energy, water and waste reduction.

Saving Energy

The hotel keeps checklists, monitoring and records are maintained and audited through internal audits as per the environmental management systems which has been certified for ISO 14001 and Earth Check Silver certification. Targets are set and monitoring is done for continuous improvement. Every month hotel completes comprehensive forms. We joined the Responsible Tourism Partnership and Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Greening Sri Lanka Hotel programme and the methodology was also adopted to improve our data collection and analysis. Heritance Kandalama received a special certificate from the Ministers of Environment, Tourism and Energy for ‘Exceptional Contribution to Environment Conservation demonstrating continued efforts in Optimising Energy Efficiency and Natural Resources Sustainability in Sri Lanka hotels industry in 2010’ . A very comprehensive energy conservation policy is available including introduction of alternative renewable energy and bio mass. A substantial amount of energy is saved by these measures every year.

Renewable Energy

Bio mass plant is the best thing that we have done for the environment; it uses a renewable source instead of a depleting source. The amount of Carbon dioxide emitted is drastically reduced. Valuable foreign exchange spent to import fuel is saved. Further, the community has a financial benefit when wood is supplied to the hotel. Abandoned and fallow lands are enriched when grown with Grilicedia as the nodules in the roots nitrogenize the soil. The leaves provide fodder for livestock which will again raise the income for the villagers and increase the milk supply in the area thus contributing to better public health. The leaves if not used for livestock can be used as mulch to fertilize the soil, prevent erosion and prevent drying up especially in the dry zone..

Saving water

Hotel is surrounded by the 1700 years old reservoir built by the ancient kings to collect rain water, which provides water to cultivate over 12,000 acres of rice paddy farms. This water has been untouched & none of it is used for hotel use. Water is obtained from deep tube wells in a sustainable manner. In addition, rain water is harvested from a maze of gutters. 100% waste water is painstakingly recycled by a state-of-the art facility and reused resulting in reduction of fresh water use.

Waste reduction, recycling and reusing

We employ highly creative dry & wet waste disposal methods. 100% waste is recycled and turned to a resource. No waste is dumped. Home grown concept of a 7R recycling & conservation System is in operation and this creates zero waste.

Our waste water recycling plant is the most sophisticated system of its kind in use by a hotel anywhere in Sri Lanka.. An elaborate purification process ensures that the water coming out of the system is clean enough to use in gardening. The dried sludge, treated to ensure it is safe, is used to make organic fertilizer used in our compost pits to make 100% natural fertilizer by combining with garden waste and other natural materials. Our purification processes are regularly checked by scientists from the University of Peradeniya, to ensure compliance with the highest possible standards
